1 in 8 women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It is therefore important for all of us to help raise breast cancer awareness and what better way to do that, than use the power of art.
Early detection is key for any disease and although we hear the adverts and know the importance of doing breast checks, we often still do not prioritise our health assuming all will be fine. Sadly its generally not until someone connected to us has been diagnosed that we pay full attention.
This was the case with me. A close friend in her mid-late 30s at the time was diagnosed, leading to radiotherapy and a mastectomy. At the time we stood by her side through her journey, witnessing the ups and downs and often feeling completely powerless on the sidelines. This lack of control lead me to channel my processing of the situation into a painting. A painting that drew on the strength of women despite facing adversity with the Title “Silhouette”.
Silhouette was created in honour of my friend but ultimately all women who have and have had breast cancer. To let them know that we all stand behind them and further pledge to get the message out to other women to regularly check their breasts.
We have deliberately used minimal colours to keep the painting light and energised with a simplistic silhouette of a woman to keep the contemporary mode. Using black and blue inks to illustrate a breast that is visually different to the other we show the beautiful strength of a woman facing breast cancer. This is a very striking painting that is 183cm tall and 122cm wide.
To provide further support we also will be donating 20% of sale profits from the original painting and Silhouette I fine art prints to The McGrath Foundation to help support those in need.
